I was watching a TV show with my 7-year-old today. It's a classic called "Good Luck Charlie." It's got canned laughter, lame jokes, and kids who are neatly dressed, polite to their parents, and help out around the house (much like mine). And the house is clean. The show tonight was about how the Mom was about to have her 5th baby.
This Isn't Hollywood
Unlimited Potential
As we sat down to dinner tonight, my husband was telling us about a project he is working on with one of the OB/GYN residents about cord blood donation.
My 11-year-old asked what cord blood is, and he told her that cord blood is the blood that is left in the umbilical cord after you cut a newborn baby free from the mother.
So basically, the placenta, which feeds and nourishes the baby while it is growing in the uterus, is attached to the umbilical cord, which is attached to the baby.
Restless nights? Take the sleep quiz
If mornings in your house are starting to look like a zombie flick (a.k.a., your family members are stumbling around with barely an eye open), maybe it’s time to investigate what may be torpedoing your sleep.

Not Tonight, I Have A Headache
I was seeing a patient of mine the other day for a Well Woman Exam (we don't call it a "yearly" anymore because you don't need one every year-more on that in another blog). I asked her the usual questions, did the usual stuff-you know, breast exam, pap smear and pelvic exam. She's doing pretty well, is menopausal and handling that without issue, so all I had to give her for instructions was just our usual pre-written "prevention" instructions.

Power of Pre-Holiday Exercise
With the holiday season (literally) knocking at our doors, it's a good time to start focusing on the preventative measures we can take now to stay healthy. Halloween candy marks the dawn of all things decadent in the months to come. Holiday gatherings, family meals, desserts, desserts and more desserts. Rather than wait for the start of an entire new year to correct for past wrongs, why not start now and stay one step ahead?
Code Blue, Labor and Delivery
“Dr. Gottesfeld, they need you in Room 8, they’re bringing a patient up from triage”
I get up from my computer and head over to room 8. I can hear some vague yelling from the hall-not terribly unusual for labor and delivery-and decide I should go see what’s going on.
“What’s up in room 8?” I ask as I pass by the Nurse’s Station.
“They’re bringing up a patient, term, water broken, with meconium”
Ok, sounds like maybe she’s in active labor.
I arrive in room 8 and there are 4 or 5 Nurses already in there, it already seems like chaos.
